With Ethernet VPLS, corporate customers get an economical and flexible service with greater bandwidth and class-of-service differentiation to suit application requirements. In addition, enterprises retain control of their routing without having to coordinate changes through the service provider, with the ability to add or move sites easily or debug problems in case of network trouble.
Enterprises get any-to-any connectivity that links their corporate LANs across the wide area. E-VPLS is really a very simple, basic Layer 2 networking solution. Enterprise customers can build robust data networks without sharing IP-routing tables, permitting any protocol to operate over the E-VPLS network.
- Simplicity and familiarity: VPLS is delivered as Ethernet and behaves like a LAN. E- VPLS takes problems that would be complex in an IP VPN environment and allows you to solve them the same way you would on your LAN.
- Because the customer’s WAN now behaves like one large Ethernet network - Troubleshooting and problem segmentation between the Enterprise and the carrier is easier. The E-VPLS network learns MAC addresses and forwards frames and is easily tested during turn up or troubleshooting.
- Eliminates Layer 2 protocol conversion performance overhead between LAN and WAN
- E-VPLS reduces the high cost of ownership typically associated with multiple services replacing non-scalable frame relay and ATM Layer 2 technologies.
- No training required on WAN technologies as in the case with frame relay and ATM
- Removes the IP “issues”…namely, trust, security and outsourcing
- No service provider involvement at Layer 3. No need to setup BGP or static routes with the carrier.
- Business customers understand Ethernet LAN technology and have a better understanding of the associated services than any other alternative (legacy services) offered traditionally by the carrier.
